    •       Description and Objectives

Common diagnoses, pharmacological interventions and implications for physical therapy will be addressed.

This course provides excellent instruction for physical therapists planning to sit for Geriatric Board Certification, physical therapy assistants pursuing Advanced Clinical proficiency, or any practitioner looking to improve his or her clinical skills with older adults. Offered as a pre-course session, ExPAAC Focus is designed to bring physical therapists up to date on the aging process prior to participating in the ExPAAC conference.

This course may be taken separately for continuing education units or in conjunction with ExPAAC.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

      1. Understand current trends in aging
      2. Recognize biological and pathological changes associated with aging
      3. Integrate examination and intervention strategies for the geriatric client using the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice
      4. Analyze evidence to determine applica-bility of new techniques in PT practice with an aging client.
    • 8:00 - 8:30 Welcome & Continental Breakfast
    • 8:30 - 9:45 Aging: Where Are We & Where Are We Going

This presentation will look at the demographics of aging in American, the disease patterns in aging Americans that will have an impact on physical therapy practice, and the general exercise guidelines for aging adults in the areas of aerobic capacity/endurance training, strength/resistance training, flexibility training, and balance training.

Presenter: Marilyn Moffat - PT, DPT, PhD, DSc(hon),CSCS, CEEAA is Chair of the Section's Program for Physical Therapists Exercise Experts Aging Adults. She is currently President of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy and Past-president of the APTA.

    • 10:00 - 11:30 Musculoskeletal

This session will focus the normal aging process of the musculoskeletal (M-S) system, common M-S pathologies, and their relationship to function in the aging adult. Select tests and measures for aging adults with M-S impairment and functional disability along with physical therapy interventions to minimize potential consequences of M-S pathologies will be discussed. Issues surrounding common M-S surgeries, nutritional requirements for a healthy M-S system, and the impact of prescription medications on the aging M-S system will be addressed.

Presenter: Karen Kemmis PT, DPT, MS, CDE is co-chair of the CEEAA program and is employed by Upstate University Health System in Syracuse, NY, specializing in diabetes and osteoporosis.

    • 11:30 - 12:30 Lunch (on your own)
    • 12:30 - 2:00 Neuromuscular

The neuromuscular system undergoes many age related changes as well as being impacted by pathologies that become more common with aging. Research in the evaluation and treatment of these diagnoses has undergone rapid advancement in the last 5 years. This talk will update participants on findings related to the neuromuscular pattern.

Presenter: Deb Kegelmeyer PT, DPT, MS, GCS is an Associate Clinical Professor at Ohio State University, chair Geriatric Specialty Council of ABPTS, Distinguished Educator Award 2009. Awarded a fellowship in geriatric research.

    • 2:25 - 3:45 Cardiopulmonary

The cardiopulmonary system undergoes many age related changes as well as being impacted by pathologies that become more common with aging. Red flags associated with this system must be understood for therapists working with this population. Recent research involving interventions will also be discussed. This talk will update participants on findings related to the cardiopulmonary pattern.

Presenter: Bill Staples PT, DPT, MS, GCS is Assistant Professor at University of Indianapolis, has served on the Section Board for nine years, and is a frequent author in Gerinotes, as well as a national lecturer. He earned the Distinguished Educator Award in 2006.

    • 4:00 - 5:30 Integumentary

This session will focus on common issues affecting the aging skin including impact on healing. Issues related to dermatitis and skin cancer will be presented along with how nutrition and other lifestyle issues affect the skin. A look at skin failure at end of life will also be presented. The session will conclude with how physical therapists play an important role in the issues of the aging integumentary system and improving the quality of life of our patients.

Presenter: Jill Heitzman, PT, DPT, GCS, CWS, FACCWS is a charter member of the Wound Management SIG and has written and lectured on the topic of the aging integumentary system at universities and health facilities across the nation.
